That's because Vista is designed to crash if you tamper with it. Vista has a very good anti piracy scheme going for it. If you run out of time then it locks up. If you use a wrong key it will only work as Basic for the time limit. If you tamper with it, it will BSoD all the time.
Just buy the things and it'll run no problem.
I actually like Vista. I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 and it's flawless. Sure it's not as fast in games as XP is but that's not Vista's fault. It's the hardware manufacture's problem as they wont make good drivers.
Vista x64 is vastly more stable then XP x64 and if you want to run a x64 OS for gaming then Vista is the only option.
Also Vista does a vastly better job at load balancing on multi core CPUs. On XP, only cores 0 and 1 get any real usage. Cores 2 and 3 are hardly ever used unless I force programs to run on them. With Vista, all the cores are balanced out with the load. Though cores 0 and 3 are used more then the others, but not by much.
Also there are a few good things about Vista that XP doesn't have. Like built in media center extender, caching, fast searching, and a damn good security system.
For the ones that don't like the security, all you need to do is learn it. They took the best features from most Linux distros and Windows Sever 2003 and put them in Vista. Making it very secure and less prone to viruses. Which is an amazing job.
