The layout and basic design is kind of cliché, it also looks like you were trying to get like a blog feel with the archives but the main content in the frame is sort of incoherent with lots of open space that could've been extra space for content or area for links and such. (ex. Comment, Read More, Article by ______)
You're definitely on the right track I suggest using different text something more basic can make things look a lot better like Helvetica. Also try to snazz the design up with more than just a gradient in a box.
