Who is Monica?

I always hear my friends of African descent referring to each other as Monica. Typical conversation starter:

"Ey bro, what's poppin'?"

"Monica, what's good?"

It's not just my friends either; I see it quite often in TV shows and movies too. Is it some sort of in joke or are my friends actually gay crossdressers? HELP.
