Well you just go to love this link I got for my spam box.

It started in WW2, one of the only foods that were not rationed was spam. So almost every meal had spam in it. This became a famous sketch made by monty python called spam, where the word spam was repeated constantly. Because of the nature of mass emails arriving consantly and unwanted they became known as spam.

I suggest you look up spam and monty python on youtube and you will understand better, that is where the phrase came from.
