Software patents are a constant hot spot for legal lawsuits and, being the new owner of the "Slide to Unlock" patent, Apple now holds one that could impact Android devices.
Per the United States Patent & Trademark Office, the following is used to describe the function:
"A device with a touch-sensitive display may be unlocked via gestures performed on the touch-sensitive display. The device is unlocked if contact with the display corresponds to a predefined gesture for unlocking the device. The device displays one or more unlock images with respect to which the predefined gesture is to be performed in order to unlock the device."
Apple is already in the middle of a heated battle with Samsung and this new patent equips the California-based company with another strong claim, should they choose to use it against other Android manufacturers or even Google itself.
Fortunately, owners of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus should be safe for the time being as a result of the operating system's new facial recongition unlock feature.
