I can enjoy a good book once in a while.
It's been a while since I read a good one though.
I especially like fantasy (good old LOTR)

Which _one_ would you recommend?

(Hi btw :x Looks like a good forum. Might stick around for a while)

dark tower? is that the one with 4 books in it? i think it starts with Gunslinger...if it is, then i've read them and although im not too keen on stephen king's works, i quite liked them

terry pratchett ftw though! if u havent read any of his work, i'd recommend u start with "Guards! Guards!"

yeah it starts with gunslinger, 7 books in toal im pretty sure, all good reads, very good descriptive writer. But I do have to agree Terry Pratchett is an amazing novalist. Some good books, and not painfully long. Only you can save man kind ftw =-D

im also a lover of terry pratchett now especially the guards series so i certainley recommend those if you havnt read them already and like piasa already said start with "gaurds! guards!"

the hobbit ifu havnt already read it, i imagine you have

"his dark meterials" is 1 of the best series i have ever read, for me it was perfect and i loved all 3 books - northern lights - the subtle knife - the amber spyglass

Here are some of the great fantasy authors out there right now and their major works.

R.A. Salvatore - Drizzt Do'Urden & Artemis Entreri (Both legendary fantasy characters that were made popular by his books.)
Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time (11 out of 12 books are currently finished)
George R.R. Martin - A Song of Ice and Fire (4 books are out so far, 5th expected soon)
Steven Erikson - A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen (Not sure the total number of books, but I've read 4 so far and they are AWSOME!)
Melanie Rawn - Dragon Prince Trilogy (Great female author.)

These are just some of my favorites. Salvatore and Martin are my personal favorites though.

Ahh his dark materials, i was glued to those for like 5 days straight an excellent read definately, i do like the Darren Shan series though, 12 books provide a nice long planned out story, worth reading if you haven't.

his dark materials...hmmm...the 1st one was wonderful, the 2nd one was pretty good, but i downright hated the 3rd one, simply because of his "its all the church's fault, the church is evil" attitude all the way though. im not particularly religious, but that just grated on my nerves all the way through ><

melvin burgess's "bloodtide" is good too - pretty gory, but good =D although i dont read the last chapter anymore coz it depresses me...the 2nd to last chapter makes a much nicer ending ^_^

and anne rice...i dont care what anyone says, i still <3 her books =D

About Stephen King... I'm reading his Lisey's Story atm, it has got to be the least-easy-to-get-inot of any of his I've read (about 6 or 7 probably)... but I'm waiting for it to get better cause I paid for the bloody thing :P

The last one of his (King's) which I read was certainly one I won't forget any time soon, it is called Needful Things and if you can get your hands on it, you will get a helluva 'wtf' out of it lol It was incredible how it kept building up and layering all the stories together and intertwining the characters... and then the last few chapters are incredibly fast-paced, it's got to be the most entertaining (fiction) book I've read in recent memory.

Film adaptions of books are usually piss-poor compared to the real story. Most of the best books cover events of days, weeks, even years, and it would take so much longer to convey all that information and storyline through an audovisual medium (i.e, a cinema screen) that you'd be there long enough to get a very sore ass and a maxed-out credit card from popcorn debt :P obviously that's not going to work, and so you have books remaining popular as entertainment for people who actually have imagination+brains+a bit of time.
