Signatures with coding?

I was planning to make a banner/signature with a little icon that showed if I was on AIM or not... but I have no idea where to start. Could anyone help me?

Hah, they would charge you per year, then tell you that gold status for another $x will allow more edits and views etc..

Well, AOL never released the official AIM specification anyway.

Isn't it too resource consuming ? Would it not be better to do either:

file_get_contet("online.png);
header("image/png");
?>

or just simply:

<?php
header("location: online.png");
?>

on the script to test the online status ?

Didn't say that article was wrong did I? Just when you are looking for solid facts, wikipedia is good, just wouldn't trust it too much.
