I'm thinking of building a web application, that will features basic things like registering, logging in and logging out. I wish to display profile pages and several other pages, more or less dynamic content from a database, preferably MySQL, but I'm willing to use a different database application also.

So, whats the more obscure programming language you can think of that I can run on a web server and develop a dynamic application. It must be able to connect to some kind of database, I kind of wish it to be a MySQL but if anything else, I can give it a try.

I am willing to learn this language, and I'm thinking of releasing something after I finish it. I'm just thinking a basic user system, but I might make something out of it :)

So, let's go!

I have already played enough with PHP, something a little more fun?

Try with a framework? I.e. Zend or Symfony, it's always good to learn a framework to do things like a login system as they can handle the sessions and most functionality like email systems, I personally use Zend 1.0 as I haven't taken the time to learn the later versions (Plus we prefer the syntax of 1.0 over later versions at my workplace)

But doing it from scratch is also good practice, why not do more than login/logout, add user flags - i.e. admin, moderator but don't use a rank system like 1->3 where 3 is top level.

Assign each "flag" a different id, name and such and link this to a user account, then check if the flag exists to display certain data over other data. This could also be used for non-ranking systems like if the system was to be used for a corporate system; a user is from the client A and can see the data for A, but another user from client B can only see the data B.

I don't think you should go learning loads of languages without knowing one very well.

All the best,
Richard Komakech.
