Hey all,

What language is easier and more productive for web development? PHP or ASP.NET?

What are some of the pros and cons of each language?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Easier = PHP (by far)
More productive = ASP.NET (after you get comfortable with it)

I'm sure you can find plenty pros/cons of the two using google.

Thanks... and I know I can find it using google, I was just hoping to get answers by some people here who are experienced in both languages.

ASP.net vs PHP - performance, future-proofing & ease of development - Stack Overflow

Pick a language and stick to it for a while. You can try both, but eventually one language will feel more comfortable. The more comfortable and capable you feel with a language, the quicker you can accomplish tasks- which equals a better result per development time ratio.

If you love windows, it's okay to use ASP.net.
If you like open source languages, and vast communities with varying skill-sets, PHP might be better for you. Note that as more people on the web develop in PHP, there are more newbies trying it out and publishing bad or insecure code than in ASP.net. Though there are bad coders for every language, PHP is the #1 language for bad coders (from my experience). Read that link I posted. That doesn't by any means make PHP less of a language, nor does it make the ASP.net community superior. It is what it is.

As far as development and ease of use, the language you use more often is usually the one you're faster with & more comfortably develop in.

In the end, the language doesn't matter- it's what you do with it.

I've never used ASP.NET myself, but I am intimately familiar with both PHP and C# and both are suited for very different tasks -- knowing both platforms and their capabilities will save you a great deal of time when designing web applications. Without a doubt, and I think most web developers would agree with me, PHP is the easiest and most productive language, though that isn't to say that it is necessarily the practical choice for a particular purpose.

PHP excels at two things: serving textual data or other simple, dynamic structures and enabling lazy developers to write functional code with very high productivity. Conversely, ASP.NET is cumbersome but efficient, and possesses a potential for scalability that's orders of magnitude beyond the load PHP is capable of handling. Take for example a scenario in which the server must obtain a large amount of POST data from the client, gzip it, AES encrypt it and return the data. In PHP, this consists of two function calls. In C#, AesManaged, CryptoStream and GZipStream objects are constructed and chained together before the request body is passed through them and returned. It may well be the least intuitive, highest verbosity-to-throughput code you've ever seen, but on a multi-core machine, the performance dwarfs the equivalent PHP code. Take from that what you will.

It all depends on what you're trying to create, than you can choose which language is better suited to get the job done. PHP is much more widely used than ASP.NET, but I've heard great things about ASP.NET for web development (I personally have never touched it).
