I suggest you use cookies instead. Ofcourse, to prevent cookie thieving, hash the content of the cookies with md5($user . $pass . $ip). The IP will make sure that household is the only one able to use the cookie.

mysql_query("SELECT * FROM characters") << That takes everything from the table. All content. With while() and mysql_fetch_array you can get a ranking. If you want to order them, from -for example- from highest level to the lowest, make the mysql query 'SELECT * FROM characters ORDER level DESC'. DESC will make it go from high to low. ASC goes from low to high.
