It is funny how far someone would go for a petty school yard insult. Is inconveniencing your user base for an entire night, forcing them to re-enter their username/password to compute the new hash, funny? How about the fact that it may result in a loss of dedicated users? How about the inevitably growing doubt about your ability to counteract the problems?

No, I don't think anyone would be silly enough to do something like that for the purpose of a joke. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it's food for thought.

The users who followed the instructions that were given properly had no problems so chances are you're actually one of those users who didn't.
