You should check with your university first (if you're in one).
For example my uni offers Dell and Apple computers, at half the price, to the students.
Then with Microsoft Dreamspark I can get all professional software for free - including Windows OS.
Checking with your school is usually the cheapest way to get good equipment ;P

iPad + Notepad App + Baboo Wacom stylus
That's what I used for my last 2 years of college. And of course any old desktop to type up reports. But there's nothing better then taking notes on a iPad. Notepad App is amazing and there are tons of pdf/ppt annotators out there.
