A logo should always compose of more than just text(And I don't mean slap a render on it, I mean use something like pen tool or another tool to make a logo in conjunction with the text), and avoid over-using the layer options when it comes to text, infact avoid them all in general untill you've learned a fair bit, they're not often viable for logo's anyway, nor interfaces the only time I would use any layer effects would be if making a signature or some IRL photos editing.
You should mess with the pen tool, and for font /never/ use the over the top crazy font's they look like poop, always go for a simple font, or if it works, go for a nice elegant font. I just depends on the implication of the project you are working on.
