Just a question to all the old-timers, how was it back ? Only 2 sources it looks like! Malpestory was such a newborn back then apparently :):

Ahahaha.. I remember that, that's the theme I was modded to (if you want to look at it as sentimental) but honestly.. I miss those days, THOSE were the days when **** got done, people were very different. So to speak Mars vs. Venus.

Oh snap! That was when Mustek was still around!!! I just noticed that, before he ended up screwing over everyone. Uh oh :P You may have some problems now that you've brought that up.

I don't see how you can say "those were the days".. Just take a look at the releases - **** wasn't done at all. Haha.

Not much was done other than odin coding. *Some* people were coding for Titan. Very few knew what they were doing, way less than now. Also seriously back then people weren't even that good. You can't even compare them to some of the people that did Vana. Even later when people bragged about having things like merchants. Seriously, not a big deal. Player NPCs was another thing. In terms of features coded by people not from Odin, Titan, and related, I'm pretty sure 2009 was better than 2008.

The releases in 2008 weren't that good. Seriously if ThePack got tons of downloads you know the times were bad (also MoograMS repack got 6.4k replies). I remember those times. No one knew packets, EXCEPT Danny from OdinTeh and a few others which is why everyone thought they were pro. In general the releases were like editing NPCs with a couple of lines changed. If anyone released what they did before, they would all get flamed. I had around 40+ releases before the end of 2008 and they were all pretty terrible to today's standard.

Now when you look at the stuff now that was done in the svn repositories from the "pros", it wasn't impressive and really all standard coding. All the factories and stuff, that's conventional. The style of how it's structured overall is all conventional and how everyone does it.

The difference between then and now is that people didn't flame people for what was released and the expectations were much lower. The people now that post here regularly think they're pro and therefore can flame everyone because they can write NPCs more efficiently which is stupid.

yeah things weren't done at that time because it just opened... so go forward a month or two. Also I think that time odin forums were up and more development was done there.

Not all of us are full of ourselves. Not everything has to be compared or equivalent too "coding" standards and/or knowledge of the field.

  • The community was more "together" back then
  • The people were 10x better then today's in this community
  • People got together for the common good of pserver developing IE. Learning, teaching and so forth.
  • No one really had a clue what they had when Titain was released, however that's what gave them the motive to learn and teach others.
Amongst numerous other things. Who cares about the releases? Look at the community back then as a whole, as a pose to now. The real old-timers will know what I mean.

It's got nothing to do with the releases, or how things were coded or even how many people had knowledge of what or their knowledge level. Please take a look at my reply above.

No, everything relates to the amount of work done here. This is a development forum. People come here to develop sources and to learn. The only way you measure how much something is done is through the release (those were the times when **** got done). No, not much more, if any got done.

Now, if you actually read what I said, I actually agreed the community was better in the past because no one flamed for stupid things. Also, really that was the only difference. Everyone was friendlier and that sometimes makes all the difference. People were then more willing to help each other and learn. You get people now that flame people asking for help. The section is still around for the purpose of developing though and that hasn't changed. There just isn't much developing and some people just think they have the right to flame because they can code a few things.

Also I don't know what you mean by real old-timers as I've been around as long as you have, since the start of OdinMS. I've developed just as much as anyone else here and I've also run a server for a long period of time. Everyone is just blinded by nostalgia. The community was better, but what's being argued is the state of development. Who cares about development? The developers do.

3 years and I still can't code ****

Fair enough, you're right. Although from my personal point of view. The communication between people and the attitude shared and given between everyone was a huge contributor. People didn't feel as "discouraged", perhaps, from learning and work toward a better tomorrow in this community.

Hence why I appreciate the fact that you said this:

Everyone was friendlier and that sometimes makes all the difference.

Yeah and part of the reason why everyone was encouraging was because everyone had the same issues. Everyone was new (some more than others) so people helped each other out which is why the community was better. Now we just get the people that flame others for asking help. I mean it's one thing just to ignore the threads asking for help, but it's another to just flame them for asking help.

:P I remember the old Satellite skin
Very simple. Loved it.

should ask Mental to buy/reup it.

I remember those days too.
I remember when Odin was still in private beta and searching maplestory private server brought up crappy game maker clones (oh wait, I made one of those myself...)
But yeah, the community back then was epic because of how nooby everyone was.
It used to be difficult keeping your topic on the front page even a few hours. Now you can leave your topic for half a year and it'll still be on the front page.

LazyBui, you can find quite a bit just off Google. :D Anyways, i was there back then, but i was a total noob. The community was better back then, because everyone was new, and so on so forth. I liked those days, but now, many people have knowledge of Java, C++, Java script, C# and so on. It would be nice to go back to the olden days. But, now we moved on, and now we are where we are.
