Load is not an issue Rice. I've got 8 dedicated cores running like a beast in raid 10 right now and everything is SMOOTH. That being said, SSL is not supported for login on its own that I'm aware of sorry.
I think the security is fine. There's no need to overdo it with SSL.
Besides, what is there to protect? If we are dealing with seriously personal stuff, or money (credit card info, debit, etc) then you would need to secure that.
But I don't see any point of securing every single part of the forums...
Well, what if someone from the community wants to get into a moderators account, so rat's the moderators computer to gain access and record login information... would an SSL prevent the rat from working? Not sure what an SSL does apart from https:// but if it would stop that, surely it is worth it?
