Sorry to revive this after a bit of over 2 months, but I have trouble doing the side of the sword(the width). I try to S>X and it just doesn't want to manipulate it as I like.

You can also just select Verts and Press Alt M and select At Center.
It will merge the selected Verts which has the side effect that it removes the no longer needed verts.

Alright thanks. I somehow got it to finally work. Now selecting verts with the box selecting technique is getting kind of annoying. Is there a simpler way to select and deselect vertices?

Holding shift and right click the verts ...
You probaply should have found out by now that selecting all verts of that side and merging the verts will get a pretty ... iteressting(?) outcome ...
Theres no realy other way.
Modeling is as easy as drawing circles some times.
Theres always some work that is anoying but has to be done.
Thats life ... sadly!

Now here is a tip in Blender:
If we want to scroll up we hold shift and scroll down.
If we want to scroll down we hold shift and scroll up.
If we want to scroll left we hold CTRL and scroll up.
If we want to scroll right we hold CTRL and scroll down.

These are important to know because eventually you are probably going to need to know how to do this.

How do you get to the first image, I open it up and I got some kind of weird 3d Cude instead of the 2d one and none of the windows and buttons are right. How do I get to the grid view.

First lets verify what blender you are using.
The interface of blender changed with 2.5.
Second, thats the default scene in the screenshot, that didnt change throughout the versions.
The grid is active in any view, op is in top view, shortcut for that would be numpad 7 (cba to look if its the same for 2.5 onwards).
