Every country has its good's and bad's and that includes China.
You can't say that the country is trying to reach "higher good", if the state is supressing free speech, doesn't accept different religions, massively restricts what people can and cannot do, attempts to have a full control on majority of it's own country people, corruption is widespread within the government and that's just a drop in a huge sea of problems. Think of totalitarianism meeting dictatorship and add a bit of a spice called "communism" - that's when you'll start to see the deeper issues behind all of this, if you do want to waste your energy and life on trying to dig, which would obviously come with its own consequences.
Although, don't worry, every country in the world is same, some are less, some are more, but China being one of the power houses of the world has a lot of attention to it, so it cannot hide things that are not acceptable anymore. "Democracy" is just a word that people want to believe in, but I'm not sure when exactly it was killed.

On a positive note - it's a beautiful country, having an extremely rich and deep history, full of traditions and good people. A country that helps the rest of the world's economy to continue running (looking at it this on a bright side).
