Hello
My friend is having problems with his old dell machine, alot of freezing, even though its cold outside (raining) i dont think its a heat problem but i could be wrong.
The psu and video card are new and not old. So basically he decided to get a new computer.
These are the following specs i have looked up, all prices are in Australian.

Processor
Intel BX80557 E6750 CORE 2 DUO E6750/ 2.66GHz/ 4MB CACHE/ 1333FSB/ LGA775 $285

Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-N650SLI-DS4 Quad Core nF650i-SLI 2xPCIE, DDR2, RAID, 1394a, Gb LAN, ATX $225

Graphics Card
Ati Radeon X1950 Pro $205?

Memory
Corsair 2GB (2x 1GB Kit) Value Select PC-5300, 240-pin DDR2, non-ECC, Unbuffered $121

Hard Drive
Seagate ST3320620AS 3.5INC CUDA7200.10 320GB 7200RPM 16MB SATAII NCQ $121

Optical Device
PIONEER DVR-212 8x/ 18x Dual/ Single Unbranded Beige OEM SATA $63 (X2)

Keyboard/Mouse
LOGITECH Cordless Desktop EX 110 USB/ PS2 $57

Operating System
MICROSOFT WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREM 32BIT DVD DSP OEM $164

Speakers
LOGITECH R-20 SPEAKER 12WATTS RMS/ SAT:6WATTS RMS(3WX2)/ SUB:6WATTS $33

Total Cost:
$1,337.00

Firstly im a bit confused on why the E6600 is $53 more then the E6750.
Also since the motherboard only supports sli (i think) and his getting an ati card which may become crossfire later in life,
im wondering what sort of motherboard that supports crossfire.

Other then that he might get a GeForce 8600GTS.
Will the RAM be any good or should he go higher?

If anyone can give any recommendations for a different motherboard or any pc part, it would help me alot.

Thanks in Advance.

I see what you did there.

It looks fine to me, but I would recommend dropping Vista and sticking with 32bit XP, and getting a 5.1 soundsystem if he has room for it. That should cut the price a bit so if he does a lot of gaming throw in an X-Fi soundcard and that will improve sound quality and performance a lot.

Get XP Home OEM then. There aren't many differences the average user would use. Also he's a fool for wanting Vista. Even microsoft admitted Vista is a failure.

mainstream vista is a failure but enterprise isnt....

I have changed the motherboard to Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P. Is this a better choice?

1. How about Kingston ?

2. I would rather recomend some better logitech speakers...
- minimal: X230 (2.1) / X530 (5.1)
- optimal: Z-2300 (2.1) / Z-5500 (5.1)
Sound is very important for games and movies ;)

You really think its viable to recommend $500 speakers to someone who was originally only willing to spend less than $35?

Agree with cvbn on the speakers he suggested though, check them out.

Heres an ok system i just made from the top of my head
PROCESSOR---------------
intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz 4M 189$ (280AU$)

MOTHERBOARD------------------
EVGA 122-CK-NF67-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail 160$(240AU)

RAM---------------------
G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 100$(150AU)

VIDEO CARD------------------
8800 GT 256 Mb Video card 209$(313AU)

HARDDRIVE-------------------
(TWO 65$ each.) Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250620AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
65$ + 65$ =Around 140$(97AU)
OPTICAL DRIVE
20x Dvd Burner
40$(60AU)
SPEAKERS________________
an Ok 5.1 speaker system
56$
(84AU)

189 = 283.5
160 = 240
100 = 150AU
209 = 315AU
140 = 210AU
56 =84AU
854USD = 1282 AU? Approximately ?
Total System Cost = 854$ + a Case like 50ish (USD )
1.00 USD

=

1.15555 AUD
so About 1350$ to 1400$? Australian with shipping?
2.6 Ghz
4gb Ram
5.1 Sound
8800 Gt (faster than the video card you picked)
Two 250 Gb HardDrives for a total of 500 Gb storage
20x Dvd Burner
Also what about Power supply / Monitor/Mouse/Keyboard.....CASE?
Also For the OS Look for the OEM VISTA Copies They are A LOT CHEAPER around 80$ I think. . . the retail Boxes are way over priced....
(if you really wanna buy any os at all)... heres home basic for 95$ USD = ~145 AU?

Also use Vista X64 Bit you get a good 10 -15% boost in performance... and do not use the x64 bit windows xp versions they suck. . . if your not going to use Vista then use Windows Media Center 2005.
PS: you should also look into a 600 + Watt power Supply with a STRONG 12 Volt line somewhere around a single 12Volt line with a 50A + Output for stability. . .

The 8800 Gt is a fast card for general Gaming but the one i linked to is the 256 Mb Version. . . there are 512 Mb Versions available from 250 $ to 290$ and they are worth the Money... There is a noticeable speed increase between the 256 and 512 Versions. . . but in aether case i tried to match your component Vs Price Ratio with another aspect of performance.
So the general Formula i used was Price V. Performance V. Afford ability... and under 1000$ Price range.
If you still want to spend 1400$ +++
You should consider
a
Intel Q6600 Quad Core processor 270$
eVGA 680i SLI the A1 Version of the motherboard (Hard to find everyone buys them all . .. all sold out everywhere) 290$+
4gb DDR 2 Ram 6400 there are some dual channel sets from G skill that have good cas latency 4 for around 130$ on new egg.
8800 Gt 512 Mb get two of them and run them in sli there like 250$ each
and just get big Hdd and Good Psu and an Optical Drive.. and a case...
I built a similar computer for about 1500$USd = about 2100(i think) Au even and it FLIES LIKE IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FAST for the $ and im RUnning X64 Bit Windows Vista Ultimate. . .
So Consider throwing in another 500$ AU and you could have a substantially faster computer ^^.

Also the 8800 Gt is due for a price Drop Soon it will probably be around 150$ Usd For the 256 Mb version and probably around 220$ for the 512. . .
I hope I was useful... to some extent in my response.
Cheers Btw I love Australian Beer tell them to keep making the stuff! ^^ Those Big cans Really ROCK!
