UI editing

Hi everyone,

I would like to learn about the UI editing and customization process in PW clients. First of all, I have a basic question:

Are surfaces.pck and interfaces.pck files "protected" and shouldn't be edited, or is it perfectly fine to modify the aesthetics of your PW private server user interface? I'm asking from a player's perspective, not as a server owner.

If the answer is "yes, private server owners don't get harmed in any way by editing your personal in-game UI" I would like to explore the process further, as I know many players have created custom UIs for the servers they played on.

So far, I know I need an SPCK unpacker/packer, Paint.NET, SageThumbs, and nothing else.

I'd like to find, create, or share a beginner-friendly walkthrough of the customizable aspects of the UI with your help.

Would you help me get started with this post?

Hi, it's been a while but i'm back at it! So i managed to extract and repack everything without crashes, but i find difficulty on where to find the stuff i actually wanna edit, and understand coordinates to insert in xml.files for repositioning.

For example if i wanna edit the minimap, make it bigger, reposition icons etc... or modify genie, healthbar and such. Is there a guide to understand a bit better files paths?

It really is all trial and error, I'm sure if you scoured the forums you could find some details about certain paths. Play around in the files and just document where the paths to certain things are so you won't forget or come back to the information later when you plan to use it.

It works pretty well =)
I'm redoing the interface and all related files (literally, redoing them).
It's not perfect, but it's functional.

I faced the same issue, after i edit and replace , my client doesn't run at all
I tried to change the background only, and it did the same thing
Do you know why this happen?

Some parts of the game follow a pattern, sometimes looking at the name, sometimes the button function.
What I usually do is change parts by parts and test.
For buttons that have names (like TXT_Info or Txt_Content), or change at runtime (like translations), I keep the name because it will be searched for during the game. Sometimes, when I don't want it to appear, I set it to -9999.
Remember, if you use dds, it needs to have an expected aspect ratio; sometimes it gives an error and the image disappears (if compressed in dxt3 or 5).

Well, i am not sure but what i do is using Adobe Bridge to see and Edit with Photoshop
I keep things the same, i don't change anything much, but last time i tried, i just changed the background of login screen, same size same everything, when i tried to log game after, game client was running in task manager, but not showing.

Believe me, you missed something =)
You didn't close a tag, you made a copy and paste mistake.
These are stupid things I've missed many times, even though I do them every day, every time (every screen, every file, etc.).
It happens, try again, it should work

I'm referring to human error; it happens all the time.
We think we saved something, but something went wrong.
I recently forgot to close a tag, and the client closed, lol.

I can explain, but to make things easier, post the file you changed so I can see if there's anything wrong.

Post the original along with your change.
