Custom Game, Odin Source

well, (im probably wrong on these things) c++ usually is the industry standard for game development, like WoW and many other games. Only games i know coded in java on the top of my head are Runescape and Wurm online. You probably should start off with something smaller, like a text based game with swing :P

WonderKing is partly coded in java, as well as C++ and F-sharp

SSFM, what you're doing is not possible without wz repacking. You can't get custom items.
Well aware of that, of which I realize I cannot discuss on these forums.

I was hoping there would be some way to pack files differently than with wz files, though, to completely detour away from official Nexon files. But I really have no idea how to do that, nor could I make a client.

Thanks for the support though, everyone.

Many have tried but i've never seen one finished. Good luck.
Yeah, personally I can't see myself finishing it either. But hey, if I can get a few people to help that would definitely be motivation. I've already received more replies in this topic than I ever have for past projects, so I hope that says something.:laugh:
Boy, do you remind me of myself back in the olden days here at RaGEZoNE. Thinking I can do anything I want, continue a lost project, make the best game in the world. Geeze. It's like seeing a deja-vu 'ya know? o.o. No offense intended, just saying you remind me of myself.
Lol. XD Ok then.

The Graphic part is hard =/ but ur proo =D . ~MOTIVATION~.

This isn't going anywhere. I consider myself intermediate at Java and C#, and I've tried making a game in XNA. Didn't get anywhere (but I did have a little GUI system and some sweet transition effects). If you don't think you know the language, then you aren't getting anywhere.

The Odin source was coded for MapleStory, intending to use the MapleStory client. Unless you want to decrypt the client, or alternatively, make your own client that sends the -exact same packets-, then you're in for a treat.

I'm not saying this to be negative. I'm telling you that you're wasting your time because you are. There is no way you can make the Odin source work for any other game. And before you bring up Renoria, that game is a pile of **** being coded by a bunch of idiots.

Even that you call Renoria a ****, it's the most decent so far. And looking at you previously work at your old MS, I can tell that Jvlaple knows more Java than what you do, if you were about to code Renoria, I'm 200% positive it would be worse or not even done. I'm not saying Renoria is the BEST! but yeah, he at least attempted it and done it, even that it have a long way yet.

Chill. I'm not doing this with the intent of making "a better game than Maple" or to impress anybody... I simply thought it would be something for to do, for personal enjoyment. It would take years (even with a MUCH larger team) to get near as much content as Maplestory has, but even if the quantity is small... I'd like to think more custom content would set it apart from most Maplestory forks. (because that's essentially what it is)

lmao.
@Shinykirby: At least people are trying, please stop flaming threads and cool it :D And here is the latest screenshot of Renoria:
SSFM - Custom Game, Odin Source - RaGEZONE Forums
, is not that bad actually, David only worked on it for a few months with a few devs.
@SSFM: Good luck on it, but I highly doubt there is a chance of you finishing it. I am the pixel artist of Renoria, if you need help just PM me. :)
@Charlie: Renoria is coded in java not C++...

P.S: If you want to make a MMORPG in Java, you can't create an excutable in it, and players need to have JVM(Java Virtual Machine) installed for it to work.

ooh :o sorry >_>:w00t:

So I was thinking how bout this... I know I'm a nobody on RageZone, but would someone care to share info with me about this? For example, how to create (and run) data files similar to wz files, but under a different format. (Starting from scratch, making all NPCs, items, etc.)
Hey there.
The wz files are just like password protected folders. This should protect their data. If you want to make something like this for your own why don't you use zip (or something similar) with a password. It has the same effect and you don't need to worry about programming this thing. Or even better. You could skip this and just put all data files in a folder (for beta testing and ****).

Hm... Never really thought of that. Would that actually work? (Opening files in a passworded zip, that is)

Ohh, i used game maker too ;D
also if you ever need an spriter
i sure help you
just send me a pm and i show you some of my work ;D
just incase you need one ^^.

Why does everyone seem to want C++ for game development?
I'm making an MMO with both server and client coded in C# and I'm getting along just fine.

Oops double post.

Too lazy to edit the posts and delete this one.

It's worth one or maybe two infractions. :D

Jvlaple knowing more than me? What good is knowledge if everything he codes is a waste of time? Check this out:

He's making his own language... that is exactly Javascript except with some parentheses removed. ...Which he's probably going to **** up and just parse the information and look for the given command (ie, sendYesNo) and interpret the string right after that. That's multitudes slower than Javascript and I doubt he even realizes that.

You have a problem with that? Also, I've recorded the speed, it's faster than JavaScript, and also it runs on a C++ Virtual Machine

PARSING = String tokenizing, which is not how this virtual machine runs. It runs on a bytecode platform which means the overhead of parsing is eliminated.

Just so I can break it to you what parsing is: [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parsing[/ame]

I really think you need to google before trying to say stuff like that which just makes you look like a retard.

Knowing "Java" is not an essential skill in the real world. Coding is not just knowing the standard libraries and making your own game with it. Any idiot can read some books and figure out how sockets work, how to build your own framework... it takes somebody who knows and understands how algorithms work, how to balance and optimize performance against gameplay, all kinds of different factors.

You are really quite funny.

The fact that he's using JAVA for Christ's sake shows how much of an idiot Jvlaple is. Have you ever played a game through a Java applet? They're fucking slow. C++ is the standard for game engines today, and there are a shitload of libraries and frameworks already out there that you can build off of. ****, you can even use straight C if you want to torture yourself. Maybe if you wanna build a game for the Xbox Live Arcade (or just use a framework that already builds a game for you), then you can use C# and use the XNA framework. That's a few hundred degrees better than using fucking Java.

Java = UP TO 95% C++ speed, it's interpreted once then compiled to native code

By the way, I am also loling at the way you said how "cool" C# is and how much faster it is than Java. Did you know that Microsoft's C# is also JIT based? That basically invalidates your statement saying Java is slow.

Know what JIT is?

I really feel sorry for your lack of knowledge.

Face it, Jvlaple and his team have done nothing more than replicate MapleStory with the SAME GUI, but shittier graphics. I don't even know how they managed to do that, to screw up that bad. The funny thing is, is that they claim it is NOTHING like MapleStory.

They have improved the UI system to... surprise! Look almost EXACTLY like MS's.

Sure, it looks EXACTLY like MS's, flame more pl0x, just shows how arrogant you must be.

He also coded it in Java, so I can't imagine how horribly slow it must run.

65 FPS and 40 LPS = Slow? You must have the brain of a rock

Just so I can show you again:

JIT compiles to native then executes, meaning the only overhead is interpreting the bytecode at classloading time.

lmao.

Yeah, Renoria is Java but the Server is being developed in C++

Great, copy and paste huh? Means anyone can do this :/:

Hey there.
The wz files are just like password protected folders. This should protect their data. If you want to make something like this for your own why don't you use zip (or something similar) with a password. It has the same effect and you don't need to worry about programming this thing. Or even better. You could skip this and just put all data files in a folder (for beta testing and ****).

WZ Files are not password protected folders. It's Wizet's own format, which I will not describe here.

I can assure you now that ZIP files will not be appropriate, for performance and practical reasons.

Games must run at top notch speed, which means loading zip files are out of the question.

Games must also have some kind of file integrity validator (MD5 or Sha512 I recommend)

To create a game data archive, you generally would use a Hashtable to store data entries, using a low-collision hashing algorithm. I recommend you have some sort of hash-mixer, mixing the low bits and high bits to minimize the chance of a collision.

Using file hashes instead of file names for retrieving files will also give you two benefits:
- Comparing strings takes longer than comparing two ints
- Using the hashes instead of names means hackers will have a harder time finding out which file is which

The kind of hash mixing I use is like this:
Code:
	public static int hashString(String in) {
		int h = in.hashCode();
        h ^= (h >>> 20) ^ (h >>> 12);
        return h ^ (h >>> 7) ^ (h >>> 4);
	}

that mixes the low bits and high bits resulting in an even lower chance of a collision when comparing hashes.

Also, it is recommended to have a fixed size array (maybe 1024 entries?) to store data, using a bitwise operator to compare the low bits with the array. Of course, each entry will then have to be a linked list, so when you have a collision you can deal with it appropriately.

how is this copied and pasted?

I agree

You can't have the game because it isn't finished yet, good luck with your game I don't like C# how it crashes just because your framework is too old :\
