Web-Based MMORPG

[N]asser, thats the best idea, but still, there you can find a lot of people, who do not know how to do it properly, and they wanna to download sample to use it, or to see the source code, and get the point of web based games.

innit john. Gotta come up with a killa concept or no one will wanna play :P

I'm 100% with John_D on this one tbh :)

Webbased MMORPG is rather simple I'd say.. Just depends on what functionality you want. There's stuff like Neopets which have graphics, moves, multiple playable characters etc which is a nightmare to develop on your own and you'll probably won't find anything even remotely like it for download, and on the other hand you have cute little projects like drugrunners or KingsOfChaos which are basicly turn based MMOG's with a large database and some cute theme's. Give me a few free days and I've one of the later working and playable for you, thats not the problem.

The problem however, as already stated, is concept. If you want a fun RPG you also need to have artwork, hundrets or even thousends of items, a dozen ways of setting up your character, etc. Not to mention regular updates and extra's. Making all of this is something you'll have to do no mater what since you won't find it for download anywhere, and even if you would it'd only be a copy of something already done.

All completely offtopic ofcourse, but still might help you get the idea of what you're getting yourself into ;)

Security really isn't an issue. You can build something 99.9% secure in PHP, ASP or Pearl, no difference there. Its mainly how much you know of the language you're programming in that determines how secure it'll be. I for instance roll laughing on the floor when I look at the security in my sourcecodes from 2 years ago ;)

And Utopia really was big indeed, hot piss! :D

FragFrog,

disagree, php or asp source code you can download much easer than perl codes.

and if you are downloading configs for the game which is running with database, you can do whatever you wanna to.

*probalby I'm wrong, because I'm not doing it any more, but still, thats my opinion.*

Bullshit, get a good configured apache webserver and its next to impossible to download the PHP files, same for IIS and ASP. If you disagree I dare you to try'nd download from one of my servers :P

Also, its about 2 minutes work to setup your database so that even if you have the right login you still can't login from remote locations, so even if you did get the sourcecode you still wouldn't be able to do anything.
