[Guild Wars] Packet encryption

GW2 and GW: Eye of the North are COMPLETELY seperate things.

Guild Wars: Eye of the North is the first actual "Expansion" to the existing Guild Wars chapters. It will require you to own at least one of the 3 chapters (Prophecies, Factions, or Nightfall) to play. This is due to the fact that GW:EN does not contain a starter island or new professions. Its Pure level 20 content. It is said to be released Third Quarter of 2007. This is the last 'known' addition to the Guild Wars 1 Line.

Guild Wars 2 is a BRAND NEW GUILD WARS - Will have more of a global world rather than everything being instanced. I recall missions will still be instanced. They are introducing PLAYABLE RACES - Human, Charr, Norn, Asura, and Sylvari. And a bunch of other things - like a Level 100 level cap...or possibly NO level cap. I suggest you go read the various GW forums out there regarding the GW1 Expansion "Eye of the North" and the new GW 2 said to go to beta in 2008 - Guild Wars 2.

GW:EN has a Hall of Monuments bit that will allow achievements of various sorts that you have gained from GW1 to unlock special stuff for your GW2 characters. What that special stuff is really isnt decided.

On a side note, i've been playing GW religiously since when I started in Beta in December 2004. Its pretty much the ONLY game I play so I have quite a passion for it :)

I've been checking the progress on this forum and every time I see a new progress post its like opening a christmas present ^_^ - Best of luck to the developers :) I'm looking forward to your completion of this project.

Well...we just encountered a highly unpleasant situation in #gwlp. lordtyrans, as far as we know has committed suicide. Despite the attempts of the other occupants and myself to prevent this. Hopefully this was a hoax, albeit it would be a rather intricate one, or lordtyrans was only being dramatic and has not yet killed himself. If you see this lordtyrans you had better respond. >=( If not, RIP.

This is terrible news. Let's hope that he is only being dramatic like you said, and not for real. If this is serious, then R.I.P:sad:

Cheers

That sucks alot..

But, can you give a % of the whole thing completed?

Nope. Not yet. The servers have been broken again by another large update. Not difficult to fix. Just time consuming. ><

Not to mention the core needs redesigning to avoid design pitfalls similar to those in other emulators.

I hope it's not true mate, if it is then rip mate.

It's probably just slowed down since they lost a member.

News on account authorizing when connecting to GWLP.

When connecting to an GWLP server listening on an Internet IP address authorization is required to play. This is accomplished by logging into an official account while the GWLP client launcher is running. Currently once an account is authorized it stays authorized for twelve hours. Please note:

  • If an account's authorization expires while in-game nothing happens. Authorization only decides whether your account is eligible to play GW which occurs at the character selection screen. It does not kick, ban, or affect in-game mechanics in any way.
  • Authorization collects no personal information that can be used to identify the account.
  • Authorization data is sent to the server the account resides on only. It is not readable by the administrators of the server and all communications are encrypted.
Advantages:

  • Can possibly be used to cache account and character information from the database, thus saving time spent on database reads.
  • Hinders piracy
  • Allows implementation of a user friendly server information and account information interface.(Currently implemented but not yet functional.)
  • Allows implementation of a user friendly server and account management system.
  • Allows implementation of a encryption key exchange outside of the official one. This increases communication security hurt by static keys.
Disadvantages:

  • Angers "pirates" xD
  • Could possibly cause a bit of confusion when someone logs in and the game tells them their account is not authorized to play GW.
  • A small burden on the player.
Any comments, suggestions, questions, or additions?

Actually it has slowed down due to scottgl having work, the darn changing packet headers(we have a bloody lot of packet headers xD), and me having to work on the client launcher. I hate the client launcher...but it has to be done. After that I will implement the server-side systems necessary for account creation and authorization. Then tackle the problem of changing packet headers rigorously. Scottgl has been working on compiling the servers on Linux mainly so we can use the test server kindly provided by Barret. We have a new programmer, ExJam, however, he won't be able to do much until one of us can fix the game server.

Current progress on the client launcher:

Progress
  • Uses current Windows theme
  • Account and Server adding/editing/deleting works.
  • All data is stored in an encrypted file.
  • Buttons: ArenaNet, Packet Dump, LAN/Internet, Update, and Close all work properly.
  • GUI is nearly finished.
To do
  • Implement packet dump functionality(Finished)
  • Implement full authorization functionality.(Mostly done)
  • Implement account creation in tandem with the server.
  • Implement viewing the server and account summary.
  • Implement injection for play.(Finished)
Shouldn't take very long. xD Note: This program will probably not work on Windows Vista. It does a multitude of things Vista probably won't like. =)

On the Authorising part, can it be made so instead of not being able to connect if it fails, but they get a message in game, and their character/progress isn't saved?

WoW! Looks great!
I wish you still would have support for Internet :( Not only lan.

There is no lan-lock. This system is taking its place. The login server can run in two modes, Internet or LAN. When selecting a server the program decides if the IP address is for a LAN or Internet server. If the server is LAN it does not require authorization. If the server is found to be an Internet server, authorization is required and the program will force you to authorize before allowing connection.

The authorization process is very simple:

1. You click "Authorize"
2. Guild Wars is launched
3. You login to your official account.
4. When the needed information is found GW closes.
5. The client connects to the desired server and talks with it for a bit. xD
6. You receive a response of either failure or success. The button will change to "Play" if authorization was successful. Authorization lasts for 12 hours and is calculated server-side.

Interesting. But I don't think that would be a good idea. That requires undermining the saving of player data, which is never a good thing. What happens if you manage to login without being authorized, you are shown a message at character selection that your account is not authorized to play GW. This prevents playing characters and creating characters.

it means i must have a official account, however the official is JP,TW,KR,EU,NA ......?????

should i need to subscribe account first?

China is still in open beta, is that account work???

ps:good luck to you all working in gwlp

As far as I know it should work for all accounts regardless of region. I don't know if beta or trial accounts will work. If they do...they would only work until the account is no longer authorized on the official servers.

An official account is any account that lets you play Guild Wars on any server operated by NCSoft or ArenaNet.

---

If we find that other region accounts do not authorize properly. There will be a server update that processes the information properly.
