What is Janus Emulator?
Janus (codename ProjectPAULA) is a C++ server emulator for Trickster Online, built for the Korean Paula client (2014).
The goal is a 1:1 recreation of the original Paula servers, not just a server that looks like Trickster: the same formulas, the same timings, the same packet layouts and even the same quirks. Every system is reverse-engineered from the original server binaries and game data, and every packet the server sends is checked against the client before it ships. Where Janus has to behave differently from the original, the difference is marked in the code.
v0.1.0 is the first public release. The source code, a ready-to-run server package and the PaulaLauncher are on GitHub, so anyone can host a server and play. Everything marked (done) below has been tested and validated in game with the real client.

Tech Stack
- Language: C++17, about 52,000 lines
- Networking: standalone Asio (async TCP)
- Database: MariaDB 10.2+, installed by 19 SQL scripts
- Game data: 67 human-readable YAML databases (rAthena-style): items, monsters, drops, skills, quests, shops, NPCs, maps and more, plus 685 map files
- Build: CMake + MSVC (Visual Studio 2026), 32-bit
- License: GPL-3.0
Architecture
Janus follows the original server layout:- AuthServer: account login and the island list
- LoginServer: the character screen (list, create, delete, select)
- MasterServer: the database hub and the link between the servers
- GameServer: the world (maps, monsters, combat, items, skills, NPCs, quests and parties), plus the community connection used by party, whisper and friends
What's New in v0.1.0
- First public release: the server package, the PaulaLauncher, database install scripts, start and stop scripts, and full documentation (install guide, player guide, configuration reference, GM commands, feature list).
- Ready for public servers: unknown and banned accounts are refused, every entry into the world needs a one-time ticket from the character screen, server-side checks against item and gelder duplication, hardened packet handling, and a clean shutdown that saves every player.
- New systems since the last update: player trade, whisper, friends, post box and level gifts, pets, the Polar Bear line, party quests, megaphones, Memory Port, monster and pet speech, refine and mature compound.

How Faithful Is It?
A few examples of original behavior that Janus reproduces:- EXP is earned on every hit, based on how much of the monster's HP you took. TM is only earned when the monster dies, and only by the player who hit it first.
- A monster belongs to the first player who hits it: other players can't attack it, unless they are in the same party.
- Party EXP is shared only between members on the same map, with a bonus that grows with the number of members and depends on the party type.
- A party member who disconnects stays in the party list and rejoins automatically when logging back in.
- Most buffs can't be used in towns, indoor maps and minigames, exactly like the original.
- Firing a gun faster than the gun allows is ignored, and doing it three times in a row ends the connection: the original anti-cheat.
Good to Know (v0.1.0)
- No passwords yet: the client sends no usable password, so the account name is the login. Server owners create the accounts and should hand out names nobody can guess.
- Paula client only: the Season 2 client is not supported in this release.
- Original rates: EXP, TM, gelder and drops are the original 1x values, plus the original party bonus.
- Some NPC dialogs and all monster and pet lines are still in Korean, as in the original data.
