⭐ What Is Pokémon NXT?

Pokémon NXT takes classic Pokémon-style exploration and turns it into a persistent multiplayer world.

Create an account, choose your region and starter, explore the world alongside other players, catch Pokémon, battle trainers and Gym Leaders, build your collection, trade with other trainers and continue your character progression between sessions.

The current Alpha includes content based around Kanto and Johto/Sigma, with hundreds of maps and a large amount of native Pokémon data already integrated.

This is not simply a battle demo.

It is a functioning multiplayer Alpha containing a real Client, dedicated Server, persistent accounts, progression, exploration, battles, Pokémon ownership and server administration.

🌎 Explore A Huge World

The current release contains:

  • 959 playable maps
  • 425 FireRed maps
  • 534 Sigma maps
  • Native outdoor and indoor areas
  • Pokémon Centers
  • Gyms
  • Houses
  • Caves
  • Towers
  • Routes
  • Towns
  • Cities
  • Surf areas
  • Region-specific encounter tables
  • Interior doorway and transition handling
  • Discovered-location travel
  • Persistent per-player HM Cut progression
Encounter data has been audited across all 959 maps.

Areas without a verified normal encounter table do not simply spawn random fallback Pokémon.

🔥 Start Your Own Adventure

Choose your supported starter and begin exploring.

During your adventure you can:

  • Catch wild Pokémon
  • Gain EXP
  • Build your party
  • Store Pokémon in your PC
  • Battle trainers
  • Challenge Gym Leaders
  • Earn badges
  • Unlock progression
  • Discover locations
  • Trade Pokémon
  • Use items
  • Manage your Pokédex
  • Learn new moves
  • Evolve supported Pokémon
  • Visit Pokémon Centers
  • Heal with Nurse Joy
  • Explore multiplayer maps alongside other trainers
  • 2000 Trainer Bots
Useful in-game shortcuts include:

J – Journal & Badges
G – Pokédex
P – Party & Storage
B – Bag
M – Atlas

⚔️ Pokémon Battles

Battles include server-authoritative gameplay with client-side visual feedback.

The current Alpha supports features including:

  • Wild Pokémon battles
  • Trainer battles
  • Gym battles
  • Player challenges
  • Pokémon capture
  • Experience gain
  • Party switching
  • Move selection
  • Level-up move learning
  • Move Reminder
  • Critical-hit feedback
  • Effectiveness feedback
  • Floating damage numbers
  • Attack lunges
  • Hit reactions
  • Faint effects
  • Battle sound effects
  • Pokémon cries
  • Battle music
  • Low-HP warning audio
Battle presentation is synchronized with accepted server battle events so flashy client effects do not decide the actual combat result.

✨ Pokémon Varieties

NXT includes persistent cosmetic Pokémon varieties inspired by classic Pokémon MMO collecting.

Pokémon can appear as:

  • Normal
  • Ancient
  • Metallic
  • Shiny
  • Mystic
  • Shadow
All 251 Kanto and Johto species have all five supplied special variety front sprites.

The source contains 3,697 additional variety front sprites across supported Pokémon profiles.

Current wild variety rates are:

Normal — 90%
Ancient — 2.5%
Metallic — 2.5%
Mystic — 2.5%
Shiny — 1.25%
Shadow — 1.25%

Varieties are cosmetic.

They do not secretly receive boosted stats, easier capture rates, stronger moves or altered encounter locations.

Once obtained, the Pokémon's variety persists through:

  • Captures
  • Relogging
  • PC transfers
  • Trading
  • Supported evolution
Nearby players can also see variety-specific follower sparkle effects.

Collectors should have plenty to hunt for.

Autonomous Trainers

Pokémon NXT MMO features a persistent population of 2,000 autonomous AI trainers living throughout Kanto and Johto/Sigma.

These trainers behave much like real players. They travel between suitable routes, caves and wild areas, battle and capture Pokémon, train and improve their real parties, move through the world with their lead Pokémon following them, and compete against other trainers in ranked battles.

Their progress continues persistently over time, allowing individual AI trainers to grow from inexperienced newcomers into powerful high-ranked rivals. Players can encounter them naturally in the world, challenge them directly, track their activity, follow the competitive ladder, and build rivalries with trainers they meet repeatedly.

The result is a more active MMO world that continues to develop even when human players are offline.

📚 Pokémon Data

The current Alpha contains:

  • 877 Pokémon catalog entries
  • 877 audited native learnsets
  • 318 species with supported evolution rules
  • Native level-up move data
  • Move Reminder support
  • Persistent selected moves
  • Pokémon ownership IDs
  • Party and PC storage
  • Seen and caught Pokédex history
  • Variety-specific collection tracking
The project preserves native source data where supported instead of silently fabricating missing mechanics.

🏆 Trainers & Gyms

The world currently includes:

  • 1,294 native trainer associations
  • 16 Gym Leaders
  • Persistent trainer victories
  • Persistent Gym badges
  • Badge progression
  • Journal goals
  • One-time progression rewards
  • Region-specific unlocks
Important progression such as Surf, travel and Cut can be configured around normal badge progression.

🌳 Personal HM Cut System

NXT includes 120 HM Cut trees.

Cut progression is personal to each trainer.

Once you meet the appropriate requirements, clicking a Cut tree allows your character to clear it.

That tree is then removed for your character only.

Another player standing beside you still needs to unlock and clear their own tree.

Kanto Cut unlocks through Misty's badge progression, while Johto Cut unlocks through Bugsy's.

No Pokémon combat move slot is overwritten by this system.

🎵 Huge Audio Integration

The Client contains 2,366 existing audio clips.

Audio support includes:

  • Area music
  • Town music
  • Region music
  • Surf music
  • Battle music
  • Victory music
  • Pokémon cries
  • Move sounds
  • Capture sounds
  • Healing sounds
  • Experience sounds
  • Party sounds
  • Item sounds
  • Trade sounds
  • Movement sounds
  • Interface sounds
  • Low-HP warning audio
Players also receive sound settings for music, effects, cries and other presentation options.

🌐 Real Multiplayer

Pokémon NXT is built as a multiplayer game rather than a single-player project with multiplayer bolted on afterward.

Current multiplayer systems include:

  • Account registration
  • Account login
  • Persistent characters
  • Map-local player replication
  • Pokémon followers
  • Player nameplates
  • General chat
  • Trade chat
  • Player challenges
  • Player trading
  • Invitation expiry
  • Server persistence
  • Reconnection handling
  • Session ownership protection
  • Atomic trade commits
  • Autosaving
  • Server-side validation
The Server remains authoritative over important gameplay mutations.

💱 Player Trading

Players can interact with other trainers and trade owned Pokémon.

Trading includes safeguards around:

  • Ownership
  • Inventory state
  • Trade revisions
  • Locking
  • Confirmation
  • Transaction validation
  • Atomic commits
  • Duplicate audit protection
The goal is to keep important ownership changes on the Server instead of trusting the browser Client.

🛠️ Server Administrator Console

v0.3.6-alpha adds a serious local administrator console directly to the dedicated world server.

The console currently contains:

81 canonical commands
21 aliases

Administrators can manage supported areas including:

  • Accounts
  • Pokémon
  • Pokémon varieties
  • Inventories
  • Currency
  • Player locations
  • Restrictions
  • Saves
  • Maintenance
  • Bans
  • Account locks
  • Gameplay freezes
  • Trading restrictions
  • Warnings
  • Password resets
  • Server shutdown
  • Server restart scheduling
Example commands:

help
who
help givepokemon
team TrainerName
species Pikachu

Administrative commands are entered into the world-server terminal on the host machine.

This is intentionally not a player chat command system, HTTP admin panel or public RCON service.

Sensitive destructive operations use confirmation and state checks before committing.

🔐 Dedicated Hosting

NXT supports dedicated world hosting with separate Client and Server packages.

The hosting system includes support for:

  • Dedicated Python world service
  • MySQL persistence
  • Explicit developer SQLite mode
  • TLS-secured online connections
  • Server certificates
  • Player connection kits
  • Persistent world configuration
  • Clean shutdown
  • Scheduled restart
  • Database ownership/lease protection
  • Server logging
Players should receive only the Client distribution.

Never distribute your configured Server directory, private keys, database configuration or other private deployment files.

🖥️ Client

The current Windows Client uses its bundled launcher to serve the game locally and opens the interface through Microsoft Edge in application-window mode.

Players do not need:

  • Python
  • MySQL credentials
  • Original Pokémon ROM files
Those belong outside the normal Client experience.

🔨 Complete Source Build

A complete all in one compiler cmd bat that downloads required dependencies needed then builds the server and client.

run it on your desired server PC:
BUILD_ALL.bat

⚙️ Automatic Windows Build System

BUILD_ALL.bat handles the normal Windows x64 build pipeline.

It can automatically:

  • Locate Python
  • Download supported Python when required
  • Locate Go
  • Download supported Go when required
  • Install isolated pinned dependencies
  • Validate project content
  • Run regression tests
  • Build the Client
  • Build the Server
  • Package the resulting distributions
  • Produce build metadata
  • Produce integrity information
Build output is placed under:

dist/build-<timestamp>
No Chocolatey or winget dependency is required by the normal bootstrap process.

Administrator elevation is not intended to be required for the standard build.

🚀 First-Time Server Setup

For a fresh server:

  1. Download all four source parts.
  2. Extract them into the same folder.
  3. Run BUILD_ALL.bat.
  4. Follow Docs/QUICK_START.md.
  5. Configure the MySQL database.
  6. Configure your world.
  7. Configure online hosting if required.
  8. Start the Server.
  9. Give your players the matching Client build.
For Internet hosting, follow:

Docs/ONLINE_HOSTING.md
The Server package also contains tools for creating or importing the required certificate and exporting a public Client connection kit.

🔄 Updating An Existing Server

Do not casually overwrite a working live deployment.

Before updating:

  1. Stop the existing Server.
  2. Back up the database.
  3. Back up your configured Server deployment.
  4. Build the new source into a fresh location.
  5. Preserve your existing configuration and certificates.
  6. Deploy the matching updated Client and Server together.
Existing accounts and progression are designed to migrate through supported additive updates rather than requiring everyone to restart.

📁 Documentation

The source contains detailed project documentation covering areas such as:

  • Quick Start
  • Online Hosting
  • Administrator Console
  • Pokémon Varieties
  • Regional Encounters
  • HM Cut
  • Adventure Systems
  • Learnsets
  • Battle Feedback
  • Audio
  • Asset Provenance
  • Testing
  • Build Validation
  • Upgrade Procedures
  • Rollback Procedures
  • Alpha Scope
If you intend to run a serious public server, read the documentation instead of treating the default setup as a production guide.

⚠️ Alpha Means Alpha

This is the complete source release of the current Pokémon NXT Alpha.

That does not mean every mechanic from every original Pokémon game has already been recreated.

The project does not currently claim complete support for every:

  • Original story script
  • Puzzle
  • Ability
  • Held-item effect
  • Move effect
  • Evolution condition
  • Breeding mechanic
  • Battle animation
  • Special malformed ROM behavior
Some systems are MMO-specific adaptations.

Missing or unsupported source data is intentionally documented rather than being disguised as authentic behavior.

This is a foundation that can continue growing.

📦 ROM / Asset Notice

The original ROM files are not included in this release.

The normal published source build does not require the original ROM files.

The project contains ROM-derived maps, art, audio and supported gameplay data that have already been prepared for the NXT content package.

Asset provenance and existing third-party notices are included in the documentation.

❤️ Why Release The Source?

Pokémon NXT has reached the point where there is enough working technology here for other developers, server owners, Pokémon fans and MMO enthusiasts to explore.

You can:

  • Host your own world
  • Study the Server
  • Study the Client
  • Experiment with the gameplay
  • Modify systems
  • Create your own additions
  • Test multiplayer
  • Expand supported mechanics
  • Build new community experiences
There is still plenty of Alpha territory left to explore, but the Client and Server source now provide a substantial playable base rather than an empty framework.

🎮 Ready To Play?

Build the project.

Start your world.

Create an account.

Choose your starter.

Meet other trainers.

Catch rare varieties.

Earn your badges.

Build your collection.

And see where Pokémon NXT goes next.

Welcome to the Alpha.

Is it possible to add other languages? Like Brazilian Portuguese? Is it possible to adapt it for Android?

Congratulations on the great work, and thanks for sharing.

Could you make a video tutorial on how to install and configure it? That would be a huge help.

Installation Tutorial:

Requirements for installation from source:

Installation Tutorial:

Requirements for installation from source:

1. open BUILD_ALL.bat and let it build the whole project automatically from the source, once its built it will have created the folder similar to the name of this "build-20260914-181230-223258Z" that is the main folder you will use from there on, it will have client and server both built in it.

you must have the full source cloned from github, somehow you have an incomplete version it seems and make sure you have python 3+ downloaded and installed before running build_all with an active internet connection too also what OS are you running? it needs windows 10/11
I'm using Python 3.14.7 and Windows 10 x64, and I downloaded the source directly from Git.
