The
Rin'negan (輪廻眼; Literally meaning "Metempsychosis Eye") is the most revered of the three great eye techniques (瞳術,
dōjutsu), the other two being the
Byakugan and the
Sharingan of
Konoha. The Rin'negan is characterized by a number of concentric circles around the pupil of the user. Its power is said to be enough to save or destroy the world. It has recently been revealed that in addition to allowing an individual to quickly copy/master various jutsu, those with the eyes may access all six forms of elemental chakra. Though the manga has only revealed five of these types. Kishimoto has apparently revealed that the eyes grant a higher-frame, high accuracy insight surpassing the Sharingan and gives the user three times the normal human visual range, making it a rival of both the Sharingan and the Byakugan. It was first possessed by the
Sage of the Six Paths (六道仙人,
Rokudō Sennin), said to be the founder of the ninja world and the creator of the first
ninjutsu.
Pein, the current and only known user of the ability, first activated it during his childhood to save one of his friends.
Rin'ne (輪廻) is the Japanese term for
Samsara, the cycle of reincarnation or rebirth in several Indian religions.
Pein uses the Rin'negan in his fight with Jiraiya, summoning a total of six bodies, all with the Rin'negan. A ability gained by using the Rin'negan is that all the bodies share the same field of vision. Because of this advantage, one must blinded in order for a blind spot to be opened. Pein also managed to summon numerous animals each possessing the Rin'negan and presumably sharing their sight.
