ebay

you can get a real nice server for like $100

Yes, unfortunately right now any extra $100 I have are going into other means. In the past two months I've lost a Video card, a hard drive, and a power supply to my main system. Parts got pulled from the server to keep my PC alive, and they are slowly getting replaced. Not to mention my job is sucking right now and income is low, while outgoing money is high. As soon as I am able, I will definitely be contacting you regarding decent specs for something to put in my rack. :8:

I understand, and no problem man. Right now I do not have an extra dime to my name either, as I just did another brand new gaming build for myself :D:

Do you have about $45 though, depending on where you live for the shipping charges??? I just took a quick look and found : ; which (at least for me) would be about $45 including shipping :): I must also add that, those are wonderful machines! I have an entire rack full of them (deals I caught from eBay just like that one)

Hey thanks for the link. I'll forward this to my financial adviser (a.k.a wife) and see what she thinks. Will run me about $52 with shipping.

Yay server arrived. unfortunately, it has no hard drives. I will have to check into those. Meanwhile I get to play around with the hardware setup.

Sorry, I thought you would have noticed no drives. Servers of a 'commercial grade' usually do not come (used) with drives for obvious data security reasons... I will get you links to the proper HDDs for that unit. You're going to be looking for SCSI Ultra 320 HDD's

So long as the drives you get have this SCA 80 pin connectors

You can then get 2 blank trays like these:

And grab drives like these to add to those trays:

Here ya go, these drives here would be the best bang for your buck...! They are SCSI u320 drives with a 146 GB capacity and a spindle speed of 15,000 RPM (and I actually found two for ya):

Oh, I knew it needed drives when I ordered it. I have an old NAS device that I thought I could pull the drives from since the only thing wrong with it is a bad power supply. Unfortunately, even though it said SCSI, they are actually SATA drives that connect to an interface board that handles the SCSI Raid. >.< (Yet another reason I'm glad I quit buying Iomega gear.)

I found the trays for $10, just wasn't sure what the drive specs I needed were. I'm planning on getting two drives and setting them up in a RAID 1 configuration. Is 146GB going to be enough space in the long run? I don't imagine using that much space initially, but if I really get this up and running good, I don't want the log files to overload the space.

Server's up and running great so far. damn loud though. I'll have to find somewhere else to stick it. I thought my routers, switches, and NAS storage devices were loud in my rack, this one drowned em all out. =P I've got the basic configuration all set for the management server, just need drives for the rest. Meanwhile I'll try playing with a live CD just for kicks, maybe I can install to a USB HD, or I have a PCI-IDE card laying around somewhere that may work until the drives come in.

I haven't seen ANY drives larger than 146GB at an affordable price, but ofc by all means if you can find one/want one it wouldn't hurt I'm sure... Just pick up something like a 2TB external for your PC (not the server) and relocate poop like logs to IT, so that you're not using resources the game server (DBs) can use.... Between MySQL and the GameDB though those really wont take up a TON of space... You'll have to look at my space test to see about that

http://forum.ragezone.com/f755/clean-database-741883/index2.html#post6272271

Oh yea, and they are loud as duck because they're only 1U, so they have smaller higher RPM fans than almost anything else around. Now imagine this: I have THREE of these running 24/7 in my main rack (yes I have more than one rack in my house :eek:tt1: )[now I just wish there was a fast enough residential internet connection available to actually do something on the WAN with all of them {I only really get to use them for LAN purposes ofc}]

You can buy a back office connection from any fiber carrier that supports transport. They range from 10mbit to 1gigabit speeds and price varies according to speed.

Has anyone had any trouble getting maps is03, is04, is23, is24 and is30 running. They seem to crash every time I try and run them.

Edit: Just realised I don't have files for is30 but all files are there for the other maps.

Wow impressive...

... especially because is03 / is04 aren't physically existing in any client ;)

So if you ve them they aren't official!

For the other maps - you should read or post your error log, only the fact that they aren't working for you is no propper error discreption nor an amount of informatin that can hwelp to solve your problem

They exist in the server files, although they seem to be empty files. I'm more concerned about is23 and is24 though. Error logs don't give any clues as to why it is crashing but I will do another test soon and post the logs.

Here is my log files.

Just tried a fresh reinstall with ubuntu 10.04 but this had made no difference, also tried using the map files from a 1.3.6 server and still no luck. As far as I can tell the maps are being loaded but then crashing right away. I also looked at the map list in pwAdmin incase I typed something wrong when putting in the new maps but everything seems to be fine there too. I've also tried starting the maps manually by typing ./gs is23/is24

Anyone got any ideas for me? :O

Never mind, I figured it out. Some reason those maps did not have allow-root in the gs.conf file, which is weird because I don't think I was ever silly enough to remove that

Thanks again 343, I ended up getting two HP 72.8 GB ULTRA320 SCSI 15K RPM Hard Drives for $10 each. I missed out on one of the drives, and given the direction the prices were going, I figure I still made out ok. I've got a 250GB USB drive I can dump data to, Or I can dump the logs to a 2TB NAS device I have if space becomes an issue. Looking at your other post, I don't think it will be. Initially I probably won't have more than 20 people on the server, and I don't foresee going over 150 or so in the near future. (Will probably need a better internet connection for that, will have to do some bandwidth tests.)

For twister495, the only thing I can think of offhand is that something got missed or didn't copy right on the install. (wrong permissions, ect.) But then I'm just getting started with this and have only really run on a virtual environment so far without enough memory to support a full map load.

ok, hard drives arrived a few days early, so they're installed now and RAID configured. Installing 10.4 now and will be on 343's release shortly.

Basically after I'm done configuring that, I copy these files in and I'm good to go? (stating simply, I know I've still got clients, and admin to configure)

Also, why isn't this stickied?

hmmm I think you might be right. Itll be either 1.3.6 or 1.4.5 because no one really cares for 1.4.4. PPL either want the original or the newest of the newest. Sad but true.
